The non-profit association DataCite, founded under German Law in December 2009, has set itself the goal of making the online access to research data for scientists easier; promoting the acceptance of research data as individual, referable scientific objects in their own right and in doing so guarantee the adherence to the rules of sound scientific practice.

DataCite has a leading role in data identification and citation activities. It has formal relationships with organisations such as RDA, the STM Publishers association, the ICSU World Data System, Thomson Reuters, and more. Its members work with over 350 data centres world wide. DataCite has already registered more than 3,500,000 research datasets and in doing so it has enabled simple access to data and citation of datasets. DataCite cooperates with libraries, datacentres and publishers to allow easy referencing and linking of datasets from online catalogues and out of scientific articles.

Currently, 22 partners from 18 countries have come together under the DataCite umbrella:

x The German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB)
