Elsevier Labs (ELS)
Elsevier Labs is a globally distributed research and development group which forms part of the Elsevier Technology division. Labs’ role inside Elsevier is to explore next generation technologies and to investigate implementations within the company. We have a particular emphasis on working with members of the global community in order to foster good relationships and open development.
Over recent years, Labs has been focussed on distributed technologies (largely cloud-based processing), semantic technologies and altmetrics. It is the latter that provides our interest in THOR.
As we see the promotion of data and other objects to become first-class data objects, so we understand that there are a variety of tasks that need to be undertaken. We, as a wider community, need to build technology that provides for cross-linking between institutions, people, articles and so forth, we need to work on the manner in which PIDs are minted and maintained, we need to research the explicit and implicit nature of the relationships that bind objects, and we need to be able to build tools that enable data to be captured from the relationships, to analyse and report on that data.
